Just reopened after a 3 year refurbishment. Very busy, so go at a quieter time if possible. Gallery is amazing, some brilliant portraits covering over 500 years of British history from tudors to contemporary. Well worth a visit, especially as its free!

The refurbishment is a delight. A better entrance with a wall of current portraits on the ground floor. An escalator direct to the Tudor gallery. A gentle decent through the 'modern world'. A great cafe and plenty of hangings to criticise... wonderful !

English do museums and galleries best , all free full of superb masterpieces and modern art fantastic visit, there was a Paul McCartney exhibit unfortunately they wanted £49 to see it 2 adults one child that is outrageous rip off don't they know there is a recession! Apart from that we enjoyed it .

Loved my visit here. A mist for art lovers, especially obviously portrait lovers. Largest portrait collection in a museum in the world. Great Paul McCartney exhibit right now with some of his personal photos. Overall, nice mix of historical and modern portraiture. Nice lay out and easy to navigate. I can’t say enough good things about it. Open in the evenings and that was a great time to come.
